After the Flare is in Antarctica! I was thrilled to learn that musician, science educator, and scuba diver Henry Kaiser has read the novel.
Henry’s note feels serendipitous, because I had seen a documentary by Werner Herzog called Encounters at the End of the World that featured him and his work with Weddell seals. Even weirder, at my event at the New America foundation in early November, I discussed Antarctica with Astrobiologist Lucianne Walkowicz — who herself was featured in a Werner Herzog documentary.
Henry’s work is diverse and inspiring. He has collaborated with leading musicians all over the world. To learn more about his extraordinary encounters with Weddell seals beneath the sea ice, you can watch his short talk here online over at Ink Talks.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the launch of After the Flare at Greenlight Books in Brooklyn. I had a great conversation with Yinka Adegoke, editor at Quartz, and celebrated the new novel with friends, fans, and family. Next stop on the book tour — Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe, Arizona on Thursday, October 19. Find out more about the event here.
Join me for the official launch of my new novel After the Flare at Greenlight Books on October 3. I’ll be speaking with Yinka Adegoke, a pathbreaking editor at Quartz and an expert on African innovation. We’ll have beer and wine and good conversation.
When: Tuesday, October 3rd, Brooklyn, NY
Where: 686 Fulton St, Brooklyn, NY 11217 (map)
The event was standing room only, and I appreciated the opportunity to join extraordinary novelists NK Jemisin, Malka Older, and Eugene Lim in conversation. We sold out of books!
Later in the evening I played in the Brooklyn Book Festival ping pong tournament — and won! Here’s a Tweet.
